Der Kinofilm »Shaft« (1971) wurde zu einem Wegbereiter für die »Blaxploitation«-Welle der 70er Jahre (Foxy Brown mit Pam Grier). Der Film war eine Sensation. Noch nie zuvor hatte das Publikum einen afro-amerikanischen Typen gesehen, der so hart und sexy wie John Shaft war. Drei Kinofilme und eine TV-Serie machten Shaft weltbekannt.
Bis heute ist die handfeste und kompromisslose Machart der Shaft-Bücher und der Verfilmungen spürbar. Aktuelle Filme wie Pulp Fiction oder Jackie Brown wären ohne den Wegbereiter Shaft nicht denkbar.
